Stick and Stones (Week 4)

Hi Youths,

Hope you are having a good summer break. Last Saturday, we wrapped up our Sticks and Stones sermon series and we learned that anger is the driving force behind some of the most cutting words you’ve ever said or heard. Anger is one of the characteristics of God (Numbers 11:1-2). When Scripture discusses the anger of God, it’s often paralleled with fire. Anger, like fire, is constructive when controlled (eg. for cooking) and destructive when uncontrolled (eg. wildfire).

When you feel anger bubbling up inside you, you’re at a crossroads. You can either control your anger or let it control you. When anger erupts, there is a process to handle anger in a way that’s helpful, not harmful. Follow this 4 steps approach:

Step 1 - Delay, don't act on your initial reaction
Step 2 - Step away and let yourself calm down
Step 3 - Pray and invite God into your feelings
Step 4 - Convey and tell the other person why you are angry

In Proverbs 14:29, we also learned that "people with understanding control their anger; a hot temper shows great foolishness."

This week, whenever you feel angry, try putting this 4 steps approach into action and see how God can help you to process your anger in a helpful way.
