MESSAGE SUMMARY

The faith journey of Peter was a journey of growth.

  • He experienced Jesus in a way that few has ever did:
  • He was sent out with the 11 disciples to minister in Jesus’ name
  • He witnessed Jesus walking on water, and walked on water himself
  • He confessed Jesus as the Christ, and received a blessing from Jesus that on him would the church be built.
  • He witnessed Jesus in all his glory in his transfiguration.

Yet when his faith was put to the test, he failed. He denied Jesus three times.
And he fell to rock bottom.

Can anyone bounce back from a spiritual rock bottom?
If you are familiar with the life of Peter, you know he does eventually turn around.

But How does anyone bounce back from a spiritual rock bottom?

Luke 22:31-34
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

Jesus knew him.

  • Jesus already knew that He was going to fail.
  • In fact, He, as the all-knowing God, knew all of Peter’s life.

Yet He still chose him.

  • Because of grace.

And He blessed him.

  • When the Son of God prays a prayer, it is an answered prayer. It is basically a prayed blessing over Peter.

In the same way, when we hit spiritual rock bottom, we depend on the grace of Jesus to recover.

  • God knew you. (Psalm 139:13,16)
  • Yet He still chose you. (Ephesians 1:4)
  • And He blessed you. (John 17:9,15)

So how do we turn around from spiritual rock bottom?

  • We can’t.
  • Only by the grace of God.
