Background of Nicodemus
- A Pharisee - religious expert / teacher of Jewish law
- A ruler of the Jews - a member of the Jewish council
- A man longing for the coming of the Kingdom of God
Jesus’ Revelation to Nicodemus (Truly Truly I say to you)
- Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.(3:3)
- Not a physical but spiritual rebirth
- Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. (3:5)

- Connect to God’s promise in Ezekiel 36
- God will cleanse the Israelites with water.
- God will put His Spirit within His people
- No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven. (3:13)
- Only the Son of Man
Key to Eternal Life = Believe
- As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. (3:14-15)
- For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (3:16)
