MESSAGE SUMMARY
We will not be able to find a successful person whose life was free from problems and difficulties. Their road was always rocky and bumpy, but the bumps were what they climbed on to get to the top.
Overcomers
Abraham certainly didn’t become a great man of faith overnight.
He had to go through and overcome some difficult tests on the road of life. Joseph and Moses had a similar experience, and so did David, Daniel, and Paul. These were the people who did not complain about how hard and difficult the road was; but they overcame the adversities in life and used them as stepping-stones to the top of the mountain.
Failure Deprived
We live in a time where we are afraid to let children fail. Parents nowadays are deeply involved in their children’s upbringing. However, over-involvement and our unintentional overprotective nature in a child’s life are hindering their growth.
Julie Lythcott-Haims, the former dean of freshmen at Stanford University and the author of the book “How to Raise an Adult” has noticed each year, more and more students arrived on campus with an impressive list of accomplishments but no sense of independence. She observed, students were lost, anxious, and depressed. They didn’t know how to handle life when it didn’t go their way.
The lack of resilience or fear of failure is partly because of how these young people were brought up. They had grown up with parents who protected them from failure, made their choices for them, and solved all their problems.
Fail Forward
The best way to make sure our children are able to handle failure and mistakes is to let them learn from them and move forward.
Proverbs 28:13-14
Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity.
Proverbs remind us of when we make a mistake, we should be honest and acknowledge it because hiding our mistakes will not make any progress. Most importantly, we should forsake and leave them.
Overcomer
Parents should demonstrate to their children how to become the overcomer ourselves.
Our sense of regret and remorse, and the desire to fix a mistake rather than to avoid it and learn from our wrongs will help our children to learn what’s fail forward and develop a healthy attitude on handling failure in a Godly way.
Failure can’t be avoided, but it can be a critical part of moving forward.
God has entrusted our children to us.
There is no better way for us to show them the marvelous truth that God can turn the stones from the path of life to make them into stepping stones.
