Where Your Treasure Is ...

Mark 10:17-22; Luke 12:33-34

Why is it so difficult to be generous?

Is it because we don’t have enough resources to be generous?
Is it because we don’t know why we need to be generous?
Is it because we haven’t received the calling?
Is it because we don’t have the “feeling” to do it?
Is it because we don’t know how?
Is it because we think others will do it?
Is it because we have already done enough?

The reason why generosity is difficult is because of the heart.

Jesus teaches us this about generosity:
“Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Luke 12:33-34 ESV)

Treasure means literally a storehouse for treasure, it means what we see as valuable.
Heart in the biblical language refers to a person’s whole life.

So, we can understand Luke 12:34 to be:
“For what (and who) you see as valuable, there will your whole life be.”

Generosity is not difficult; the issue is who we see as valuable.
We are all innately generous to those we see as valuable.

The thing we need to do is to align our treasures (who we see as valuable) with Jesus’ treasures (who Jesus sees as valuable).

Step 1: Discover (know the people group)
Step 2: Connect (build a relationship with the people group)
Step 3: Advocate (speak up for the people group)
