The situation of the church at Philippi (the epistle to the Philippians)

- Paul is coaching the church to turn this moment of trial into a moment of breakthrough.
- The Philippians church must stay united during this crucial time. (1:27-28; 2:1-2)
Unity is not a buzzword
- For Paul, unity is one of the highest spiritual disciplines.
- Unity is concrete, down to earth, measurable, and mandatory.
- The community must follow the mind (attitude) of Jesus (2:5) to maintain unity.
(1) Self-emptying
- Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. (2:3-4)

Our moment: Practicing the mind of Jesus
- Koinonia is at a moment of trial right now. We need to be united to face the challenge.
- This is the perfect opportunity for us to practice the mind of Jesus.
(1) Practice self-emptying
- Take into consideration the interests of others when deciding which worship service to attend
- Drive only one car to church; park on the street; carpool; give rides
- Sign up to serve in a ministry team
(2) Practice obedience
- Make a decision not to grumble or dispute during this difficult time
