What we can learn from the story of David and Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:1 – 12:15)
-Lust, adultery, deception, lies, and murder. One sin to cover up another. One sin bigger than the other. He could have end at each step and there was clear warning and prompting from God to stop but he ignored all of them.
-The Game Changer – David repented when the prophet Nathan confronted David: “I have sinned against the Lord.”
-If being reckless and using sins to cover another sins is a poison, then Repentance is a very powerful antidote.
-Recklessness is the willful negligence of one’s identity and calling. David had become reckless by neglecting his identity and calling as a king.
The Gospel of Luke recorded a similar story of repentance as told by Jesus (Luke 15:11-24)
-The younger son lived a reckless life and lost his identity as the son of his father.
-When he repented and came home, he was welcomed again as a son by his father. He reclaimed his identity as the son of his father.
-Our life belongs within the house of the father, not as hired servants, not as slaves. But as the sons and daughters of our father.
-We all at some point have lived recklessly. We have been indulged in our own needs and desires above all else. We have been ignoring all the warning signs in our lives and we fell deeper and deeper into your sins.
-We have become reckless by neglecting our identity as the son and daughter of God the Father.
