Arrogance

What is recklessness?

– Recklessness is the willful negligence of one’s identity and calling.

How does recklessness work?

– At its core is the thinking that you can keep a small area of darkness to yourself, as long as you have it under control; it doesn’t harm anyone; you are performing your duty; and it is contained; then you should be able to get away with it.

Our identity and calling

– He (God) chose us in him (Christ) before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he (God) predestined us for adoption to himself as sons (and daughters) through Jesus Christ … (Ephesians 1:4-5)
– In him (Christ) you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit … (Ephesians 1:13)

Walk as you are called

– I (Paul) … urge you to walk (meaning: to live) in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called… (Ephesians 4:1)

Walk as children of light

– But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you … For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous, has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. (Ephesians 5:3,5)
– For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk (meaning: live) as children of light … Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. (Ephesians 5:8,9,11)

Be filled with the Spirit

– Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, … do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery (meaning: excessive indulgence in sensual pleasure), but be filled with the Spirit … (Ephesians 5:15-18)

Reflection

(1) According to the pastor’s description of recklessness, are you living recklessly?
(2) Are you keeping an area of darkness to yourself, thinking that you can keep it under control, and it should be nobody’s business to ask questions?
(3) What will help you to constantly remember your identity and calling?
