When God doesn’t make sense
- Have you ever felt that God was asking you to let go of something significant in your life?
- Have you ever stood at a crossroads where God’s voice seemed unclear, or even unreasonable?
- Abraham, the first patriarch of the Israelites, was at such a crossroads.
- In Genesis Chapter 22, God gave a command to Abraham, which shattered everything that Abraham believed.
Walking through the Promise Trail
- Genesis 12 - The Call of Abram
- Genesis 15 - God's Covenant with Abram
- Genesis 16 - Sarah Offered Hagar
- Genesis 17 - God reaffirmed the covenant
- Genesis 21 - Isaac was born
Story of Jehovah Jireh (Genesis 22:1-18)
- God tested Abraham (v. 1–2)
- Abraham obeyed (v. 3–10)
- God provided (v. 11–14)
- God affirmed the promise (v. 15–19)
Jehovah Jireh: The Lord will provide
- Abraham called that mountain “Jehovah Jireh”, not just to commemorate an event, but to declare an unforgettable truth only learned through radical obedience
- Jehovah Jireh is not just a conclusion to a dilemma, but a confession of trust that what the Lord has done,
- He will continue to do so.
Implications of the Story
- God will not take away your son's or daughter’s lives, just as He would not take away Isaac’s life.
- Abraham became a great nation, not because of Isaac, but because of God.
- Even when what you treasure most is in jeopardy, God will never fail to provide what you need for your pilgrimage of faith.
Reflection
- Where is your Jehovah Jireh?
- Is there a location where God shows up and provides?
- What is your Isaac?
- Isaac represents something you are afraid to lose, something you have built your future around
- Has this thing taken a place in your heart that only God should have?
