Why are we doing a sermon series on the book of Revelation?

  • Because it’s more relevant than ever before

The core message of this book is a question and an answer.

  • The Question: “Who is your Lord and King?”
    • This is relevant because it’s getting harder and harder to answer this question as a Christian
      • There is outside pressure from politics powers
      • There is outside pressure from worldly chaos
      • There is inside pressure from cultural temptations
  • The Answer: Jesus Christ is THE King of kings
    • Presented in an apocalyptic literature

Define: Apocalypse: “Open”, “Breaking Through”

  • Book of Revelation = Apocalypse of Jesus Christ = Opening of Jesus Christ

Book of Revelation seeks to do two things

  • Set the present in light of the unseen realities of the future
  • Set the present in light of the invisible realities of the present

First scene, prologue (Revelation 1:9-20)

Vision of Jesus

  • Clothing = Priest and King
  • Hair like white wool = Holiness, perfection
  • Eyes like fire = Purifying, cleansing, all knowing
  • Feet like burnished bronze = Kingship endures forever
  • Voice like many waters= Overwhelming, all powerful
  • Sharp two edged sword from mouth = Words have power
  • Face like sun = brilliance, magnificence

Where is Jesus?  What does this vision have to do with me?

  • Jesus is presently in the middle of His churches
  • He is present with you and me, NOW
