Genesis 18-19

Does your heart break over the current issues all around the world?

  • War
  • Refugees Crisis
  • World Hunger
  • Poverty
  • Political Unrest
  • Violence
  • Discrimination
  • Injustices

Imagine if you are a victim of these tragedies and evil, what goes through your mind?

Around 4000 years ago, in a city called Sodom, a man by the name of Lot might have gone through a similar situation.  (Genesis 19)

  • He welcomed two travelers into his home one evening
  • Only to be surrounded by the men of the whole city, who were wanting to commit gang rape and violence to the two travelers and bring harm to Lot and his family

If you were a person in Sodom, what goes through your mind?  You would likely cry for help:

  • Does anyone care?
    • No, no one cares.  The whole town is deaf to your cries because everyone is evil.
  • Can anyone help?
    • Yes, the gods of the region supposedly can - like the god of the Babylonians or the god of Sumerians.
    • But they don’t care.

In a world where those who have power don’t care and those who care don’t have power,
God shows us that he cares about justice and He has the power to deliver it.

Turns out, the Israelite God cares.

  • He cares enough to come down to see (Genesis 18:16-33)
  • He alone has the power to bring justice (Genesis 19:1-29)

He has called us today to keep His way by doing righteousness and justice.  (Genesis 18:19)
We will unpack what this means in the rest of the series.
