Many of us live busy lives and it feels like we could not possibly add anything more into our schedules. How can we make room for God? In Matthew 6:9-34, Jesus gives a three-fold instruction which can help us re-prioritize and seek God at the center of everything in our lives.
- Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth
- Do not worry about your life
- Seek first God’s kingdom and righteousness
Much of our busyness is rooted in looking for security in earthly things. But these things never give us the security we desire. Therefore, we are prone to worrying. We worry because many things could go wrong in our lives. Jesus teaches us to look at God’s provision for creation and then realize how God will provide for us – God’s most precious creatures. Instead of looking out for ourselves first, we need to seek God’s kingdom first. This means placing our lives in God’s hands, discerning what God is calling us to do and then asking him to empower us to do it. And when we seek God first, He takes care of our material needs. When we seek God’s kingdom first, allowing God to be the center of everything in our lives, we make room for God and we become less worried about ourselves.
