MESSAGE SUMMARY
- In a world emphasizing individualism, we are greatly influenced by the idea of “survival of the fittest”.
- Everyone does what is best for themselves alone.
- This creates a world that does not promote helping others.
- We only help others if we are benefitted. if not, we will not even lift a finger.
- So, can Christians, and should Christians still help others generously and kindly in this world?
What have we learned ......
- Boaz lives in a similar world, where the Israelites abandoned God and did whatever seemed good for themselves alone.
- Boaz is a rich guy and a relative of Naomi.
- He helped Ruth generously and kindly.
- He was generous not because he was rich or related to Naomi, but because Boaz did not forget God, and obeyed God’s commands.
- We know that Boaz remembers God because he talks about “God’s wings” (compare with Deut. 32:11).
- We know that Boaz obeys God’s commands because he allowed Ruth to glean freely in his field, and helped her in many other ways (compare with Deut. 24:19;22; Ex. 22:21-23).
- Be like Boaz by…
- Remembering that it was God who gave us all that we have now (compare with 1 Tim. 6:17-18)
- Therefore, giving and sharing generously.
- Do not be like a godless Israelites by…
- Remembering that God is our ultimate security (compare with Matt. 6:19-21).
- Being generous and kind to the needy so that our deeds reflect our faith (Compare with James 2:14-16).
What can we do ......
- Being generous means…
- Giving not just the bare minimum, but giving more than what we need to.
- Giving not just what people ask for, but also considering what they need.
- Giving without asking for anything in return.
- The ones in need can include…
- Family and friends
- New immigrants from Hong Kong
- The needy in our community
