MESSAGE SUMMARY

Introduction

  • We are living in a culture of entitlement.
  • People live as if a different set of rules apply to them and they can do whatever they want without any consequence.
  • We are also living in a culture of tolerance and compromise.
  • Sadly, Christians are also living with a sense of entitlement, tolerance, and compromise.
  • Sadly, Christians are also living with a sense of entitlement, tolerance, and compromise.
  • We often repeat the same sin and ask for God's forgiveness.

Problems with the church at Thyatira (Revelation 2:18-29)

  • The church was doing very well in many areas.
  • But the church was tolerating the false teaching of a woman named Jezebel who was pushing for a type of compromise teaching - Christians could eat meat that has been offered to idols. (Revelation 2:20)
  • Christians could also participate in business guild meetings where drunkenness and fornication happened.
Jesus gave Jezebel time to repent but she refuses (Revelation 2:21)
  • Jesus' judgment will come to her and her followers because of their refusal to repent. (Revelation 2:22-23)
  • For those who endure, Jesus promises that He will come soon. (Revelation 2:24-25)

What We Can Learn

  • This type of compromise teaching is still prevalent in our society and church.
  • Christians still want to live in sin and refuse to repent. We live as if there is no consequence.
  • Jesus reminds us that He will come soon to judge.
  • He is the one "who searches mind and heart" and He will judge us according to our works.
  • We were given many chances but we willingly and even joyfully repeat the same sin over and over again.
  • We talk mostly of God’s love and forgiveness and we have lost the "fear and reverence” of Jesus.
  • If we do not take sin seriously, we are not taking Jesus seriously

Repent and stop repeated sinning

  • We need to stop hiding behind the disguise of Grace. We are deceiving ourselves if we think that God will continue to ignore our sin and not punish us.
  • "God sets limits to His patience and forbearance. He warns us over and over again that someday the ax will fall and His judgment will be poured out." R.C. Sproul
