Ephesians 1:3-4

MESSAGE SUMMARY

In some way or another, we are all insecure about who we are, how we look, what we can do, what we possess.

Partly because we have allowed others to define who we are.

Who I am is defined by what others say.

  • So we strive to be the best we can be in other’s eyes. But the problem..
    • The “best” standard is a moving goalpost, the standard constantly changes.
    • There are multiple standards for us, from culture, from friends, from our wife/ husbands/ girlfriend/ boyfriend.
    • These standards are unrealistic, achievable

So in this process, we get hurt, we get frustrated and we turn inward, we don’t let others define us.

Who I am is defined by what I say.

  • When we try to look for positives, nothing comes out but negatives.
  • Self-love and self-compassion methods are ineffective.

What do we do?
How do we go back to being “good”, as God said in the beginning?

The issue is not whether or not someone defines you; the issue is who defines you.

Let God define who you are.

  • Even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and blameless before Him. (Ephesians 1:4)
    • Chosen
    • Before the foundation of the world
      • Before we were “pretty”, or “beautiful” or “accomplished”
      • He chose you for no reason other than His love for you
    • That we should be holy and blameless
      • To be perfect, without blemish
      • Like Jesus Christ

Let God define who you are, take off the name tags the others have given you, take off the name tags that you have given yourself. Put on the name tag from God:

  • I am chosen in Him before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before Him. (Ephesians 1:4)
