The Criminal @The Cross
Click Here to read Luke 23:26-43
As you read the passage, take note of the different people’s comments and attitudes towards Jesus, eg. the rulers (v.35); the soilers (v.36-38); and one of the criminals (v.39)
When Jesus was crucified, He was positioned between two criminals. As the ordeal proceeded, one criminal recognized something that the other didn’t (v.40-41)
The attitude of this criminal:
-
acknowledged the existence of God.
-
believed in a standard of right and wrong.
-
confessed that he and his companion had transgressed the divine law.
-
admitted that their punishment is just.
-
proclaimed Jesus' innocence.
He asked Jesus to remember him (v.42).
TAKE AWAY
Jesus shows that he loves us and that his death on the cross is what brings us closer to Him (v.34). And when we go to Jesus with the same attitude as this criminal we can be assured that Jesus will forgive us just as he has forgiven this criminal, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (v.43).
REFLECTION
Jesus died on the cross for all sinners and his forgiveness and salvation is available to all who have the same attitude as the forgiven criminal. Would you take some time to reflect on your own attitude toward Jesus?
Do you...
-
acknowledge the existence of God
-
believe Jesus is the way to salvation. He is the Son of God?
-
confess your sins?
-
admit Jesus died to pay for your sins?
-
proclaim Jesus as your personal saviour?
Take some time this week and respond to Jesus and the grace that He has freely given you.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1John 1:9
