When God chooses people to be parents, He wants them to be responsible for the growth of their children.
All parents want to give their best to their children.
But what is the best? What is the best for the long-term growth of the next generation?
Let us take a look at how God taught the Israelites about parenting.
Deuteronomy 11:18-21
You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.
For parents with Christian faith, God reminds us:
1. Your children are not the centre of your family
Although we are responsible to take care of the needs of our children, they can never become the only focus of the family.
Be careful! Do not let the preferences of our children taking over the agenda of our family. Do not let the needs of our children become a distraction, as we are standing for the Christian values and principles.
God has special expectations for parenting. Have you ever asked God what kind of parents does He want you to be?
Recall the arrangements you have made for your children, how do these arrangements affect the spiritual life of our children?
2. Be the role model of your child
Raising children is not based solely on methods, but on the lives of parents.
Parents need to support the teachings of their children in the form of their own lives.
Today, what am I teaching my children?
As parents, is our own behaviour a good example for our children?
3. Knowing God is the greatest blessing we can have for our children
If we believe that knowing God is the greatest blessing in our lives, how can we not bring this blessing to our children?
