Extraordinary experiences
– When we read the book of Acts, it is natural to ask: How come the 21st century North American church doesn’t seem to share the incredible experience that the 1st century church had?
– Many explanations had been offered. Perhaps the real question should be: What does the 1st century church has that enables them to experience God in such extraordinary ways?
1st century vs. 21st century reactions
– How may a 21st century Christian react if he/she is put into the situation of Acts 10?
– We may seek to find out (a) the divine plan; (b) a set of clearly defined goals; (c) the detailed Instructions; (d) the chance of success; (e) the means to do the job; (f) a guarantee of safety; before we would begin to negotiate with God.
– Peter and Cornelius, however, just went along when they were called upon to act. Their reactions are typical of the people of faith that the Bible talks about.
– By faith, Noah built a ship in the middle of dry land. He was warned about something he couldn’t see, and acted on what he was told. The result? His family was saved. (Hebrews 11:7)
– By an act of faith, Abraham said yes to God’s call to travel to an unknown place that would become his home. When he left he had no idea where he was going. (Hebrews 11:8)
– Faith is the courage to obey, when we are called upon to step into the unknown, without knowing all the answers.
