Peter was among the inner circle of Jesus’ disciples. Before the death of Jesus, Peter declared that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God. (Matthew 16:16) He was then given a new name by Jesus - Peter or the Rock. Jesus promised that He would build His church on this rock. However, Peter failed and denied Jesus three times. After his repentance, he became an important leader of the church of Jerusalem.
Peter wrote 1 Peter to encourage and comfort the Christians who were under oppression and threat in Turkey. He affirmed their identity as God’s chosen people. Although they were not Jewish by birth, they were among God’s family and received the promise of God’s Kingdom. Despite of the difficult situations, they are only sojourners. Their true hope is anchored in Christ.
Peter puts the suffering of Christians into a different framework. For Peter, suffering is an occasion to witness for Jesus. Facing the oppression from the enemy, Peter believed that Christian love and grace would be a strong witness.
Peter also emphasized that Christ’s followers should not let suffering to define their lives. Through His own suffering, Jesus is our example. After the suffering, there will be eternal glory waiting for God’s people. Peter encouraged the believers not to feel discouraged, because suffering has a deeper meaning. Christans are engaged in a spiritual warfare. Jesus is empowering His people in the battle.
