What Does a Disciple Look Like?
- We are starting a new 4-part sermon series called "Follow," where we are asking a crucial question: What does a disciple of Jesus actually look like?
The Picture of the Vine
- In John 15, Jesus gives us the clearest picture of a disciple: He is the true vine, God is the vinedresser, and we are the branches.
- A disciple is a life connected to Jesus—continually pruned and shaped by God, steadily maturing, and flourishing with fruit.
- Apart from Christ, we can do nothing; we are like a dead, severed branch that is unable to bear fruit.
- Often, we are exhausted because we are like dying branches, desperately trying to "tape" ourselves to counterfeit vines like our phones, careers, money, or the approval of other people to find life.
The Invitation to Abide
- Jesus invites us to abide in Him through His Word and prayer so that we can bear much fruit.
- My challenge to you is to commit to a daily devotion of reading the Bible, reflecting, and praying.
- Abiding in God's Word is not a mechanical duty; it is an invitation to meet with Jesus, sit in the Father's presence, and rest in His love.
- Decide today to stop taping yourself to dead things, and come connect back to the Vine.
