Two people in the Bible lived a life of such extravagance that some of us only dream of in our own lives. Yet, despite what they have, both are searching for something more. One returned liberated and freed; the other even more troubled and burdened than before.
The rich young ruler comes to Jesus hoping to obtain instructions on “what to do to inherit eternal life”. However, Jesus gave him an answer that he was not at all expecting. And he left more troubled, sad, and concerned than before.
Zacchaeus has everything that money can buy. Nevertheless, there are a lot of things money cannot buy: acceptance, identity, and authenticity. Of those he thirsted for, Jesus offered it to him. As a result, he sees everything else as secondary to what he found in Jesus.
These two stories speak volumes and help us reflect on where in our in our faith journey. Who do you echo with more?
Are there things that you cling to in life so much that burdens you?
Are you living a faith that’s someone else’s, not experiencing the true liberation that Jesus Christ promised?
