However, this pursuit leads to a dangerous cycle:
-
Endless Exhaustion: We trap ourselves in a pit of constant self-critique, looking in the mirror and seeing only flaws.
-
The Lie of "Not Enough": A nagging voice tells us our looks determine our value, and since we can never perfectly maintain this standard, we feel we are never enough.
-
Defeat: Whether we try hard and fail, or burn out and give up, we are left with feelings of disappointment, defeat, and hopelessness.
What does the Bible tell us about true beauty? We are reminded that:
The truth is that we do not have to try to become "That Girl" because, in Christ, we already are loved, chosen, and valued. True beauty is not manufactured; it is inherent in who God created us to be.
-
We are created in the image and likeness of God. Just as an artist creates art to represent themselves, God created us to represent Him. We are inherently beautiful because we bear His image.
-
Jesus shows us what this beautiful Image of God looks like.
-
While culture focuses on external appearances (weight, skin, hair), Jesus invites us to embrace an internal beauty that radiates peace and safety to those around us .
-
We are called to "put off" the old self and "put on" the new self, which is created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
The Invitation:
1. Put Off the Old Self - Identify the habits or influences that feed your insecurity and choose to release them.
-
Reflect: Is there an influencer you need to unfollow? Is there a negative way you speak to yourself in the mirror?.
-
Action: Pray and ask Jesus to help you strip away these old ways of thinking.
2. Put On the New Self - Every day, you have the choice to "put on" the beautiful image of God, just as you would put on clothes.
-
The Morning Routine: When you look in the mirror, before reaching anything else, pause and declare: "I am a holy, beloved, chosen child of God".
-
The Prayer: Ask Jesus to clothe you in His characteristics. You might pray: "Jesus, help me become more like you. Fill me with your compassion so that I can let others see Your beauty in me"
