MESSAGE SUMMARY

When Jesus teaches us to pray “Your will be done”, the natural response is to ask God, “What is your will for me?”

What is your will for me in my relationship?
- Should I date this person? Should I begin a relationship now?
What is your will for me in my career?
- Should I relocate? Should I switch jobs?
What is your will for me in my education?
- Should I study this major? Should I study abroad?

And so in seeking God’s will, we ask God to reveal his will to us.

Our prayers reveal “more about us than about God” (James Mulholland, Praying Like Jesus). What do these prayers reveal?

Perhaps that we desire God’s blessing over God’s will
Perhaps we desire our will be done
Perhaps we desire God’s will to be aligned with our life

And so Jesus teaches us to pray to our Father in heaven “Your will be done” instead.

Through prayer, our “hearts are slowly transformed into the heart of God.” (David Benner, Desiring God’s Will)
We align our lives to God’s will instead

What’s God’s will from His perspective then?

Renewal of heaven and earth (Revelation 21-22)
Where we are invited (Romans 8:30)
To also bring others with us (Matthew 28:28-30)

So instead of asking for God’s will in our everyday life decisions, we are invited to join our everyday life to God’s glorious, cosmic, perfect will for the universe.

And the promise is when we align our lives to God’s will, he will provide for all that we need (Matthew 6:33), since he is the good Father who knows our needs (Matthew 6:8).
