MESSAGE SUMMARY

In the midst of the pandemic, how can we as a church move from stuck to shine?

When Paul was writing this letter, the Philippian church was facing:

  • External Tension: Christian Living in the Shadow of the Empire
  • External Tension: Building Unity out of Diversity

KEY QUESTIONS that everyone at church must answer:

  • WHAT is our top priority?
  • WHO is the most important person at my church?

ADVANCING THE GOSPEL AS THE TOP PRIORITY

  • Standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel. (1:27)
  • Facing all the tensions in ministry, Paul reminds the leaders to be united by putting the gospel at the centre. (4:2-3)
  • When everyone at church is putting advancing the gospel as their priority, unity will be reached.

WHO IS THE MOST IMPORTANT? THE OTHERS

  • Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. (2:3)
  • Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. (2:4)
  • Unity is about putting the needs and well-being of others before your own.

THREE LIFE EXAMPLES

  • Jesus - emptying and humbling Himself (2:6-8)
  • Timothy - genuinely concerned for the welfare of the church at Philippi (2:20)
  • Paul - for your progress and joy in the faith (1:25)
  • They are all examples about putting the gospel as the top priority, for the sake of the others

CHALLENGES & APPLICATION

  • Join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. (3:17)
  • What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me — practice these things (4:19)
  • To set aside one evening per week - start from making phone calls and reach out to your friends, to care for their needs, to pray for them, and to share the Good News.
