Matt 6:19-34

WHERE DOES ANXIETY COME FROM?

Anxiety is a result of self-centered greed. It is a problem in the human heart (sin). Our culture supports this greed by saying that life is all about you.

The worldly kingdom:
– encourages indulgence and displaying wealth
– encourages living beyond our means
– results in a disparity between rich and poor
– is obsessed with sex, sports and entertainment (often a distraction)

JESUS OFFERS 3 CAUSES OF ANXIETY

What we TREASURE – Putting trust in earthly treasure is INSECURE. It corrodes. It’s unstable. (Matt 6:19-21)
What we SEE – Focusing on oneself produces a worldview that is dark, and prevents generosity. (Matt 6:22-23)
Who we SERVE – It’s impossible to serve both God and Mammon (Money). There are many ways to potentially be serving Mammon instead of God. This is idolatry, and is important to reflect upon. (Matt 6:24)

JESUS OFFERS THE SOLUTION

First, shift the focus, and then seek first the kingdom.

– Shift The Focus (Observe Creation) – Look at the birds and lilies, learn from them and look away from anxiety (Matt 6:26-32).
– SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM – Actively pursue God as an all-consuming fire, permeating all thoughts, feelings, words, and actions, so others will see. (Matt 6: 33-34)

PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS

– What we TREASURE – Practice gratitude.
– What we SEE – Practice generosity.
– Who we SERVE – Confront idols.

God provides for all our needs. We can trust that seeking Him is good.
