The "Zootopia" of Vancouver
- The Surface Illusion: Like the film Zootopia, Vancouver presents itself as an inclusive "safe haven" where anyone can be anything.
- The Hidden Reality: Beneath the surface of multiculturalism, significant walls remain, evidenced by Vancouver being labeled the "Anti-Asian Hate Capital of North America" and reports of discrimination in housing and transit.
- Personal and Internal Walls: Prejudice manifests in subtle ways, such as derogatory comments about drivers, avoiding peers who think or act differently (e.g., those with ADHD), or forming social cliques based on fashion and trends.
- The Church's Struggle: Even within the church, people often feel isolated, invisible, or "on edge," suggesting that believers are not immune to building these same walls.
- The Cultural Remedy’s Limit: The world’s prescription of "love and inclusivity" has been preached for decades without achieving deep reconciliation because the "glasses" remain blurry and incomplete.
The Biblical Prescription
- The Hostility of the Past: Historically, Jewish and Gentile groups were deeply divided by walls of hostility, including literal barriers in the Temple and social "laws" that forbade eating together.
- Peter’s New Prescription (Acts 10):
- Through a divine vision of "unclean" animals, God challenged the Apostle Peter’s traditional worldview.
- Peter realized that God shows no partiality and that he should "not call any person common or unclean".
- This led to a groundbreaking shift: the Gospel was revealed not as an exclusive club, but as a message for all nations.
- The Theology of the "One New Humanity" (Ephesians 2):
- Those who were once "far off" and "aliens" have been brought near through the blood of Christ.
- Christ broke the "dividing wall of hostility"—including religious, social, and cultural barriers—by His death on the cross.
- In place of divided groups, He created "one new humanity" in Himself.
- At the foot of the cross, all are equal as sinners in need of grace, making what we have in common in Christ infinitely greater than any earthly differences.
Living with Transformed Vision
- Identify and Stop Labels: Believers must identify the "Cornelius" in their lives and stop using derogatory labels or slurs that associate fellow human beings with demons or "outsiders".
- Dismantle Social Walls: Tearing down walls means actively changing seating habits, inviting those who are "different" or "awkward" into group chats, and approaching them as family members in God's household.
- View Non-Believers as Family: Those outside the faith should not be viewed with anger as "them," but with compassion as "lost family members" for whom Christ also died.
The Real Zootopia
- The church should be the "modern-day Zootopia"—a community where true love and trust are possible because of Christ.
- By being united despite differences, the church becomes a light and a testimony to a world longing for real community.
- The ultimate vision is found in Revelation, where a multitude from every nation, tribe, and language worships together without walls or labels forever.
