The Book of Zechariah is thought to be written by Prophet Zechariah, around 500 BC.
“Zechariah” carries the meaning of “God remembers,” as if God was reassuring His people about His promise.
At the beginning of the book, the prophet wrote “the prophet Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, son of Iddo.” In the Book of Nehemiah, we learned that Iddo was with Zerubbabel, as the priest among the returning Jews. Berechiah was the leader of Iddo (Nehemiah 12:4, 6). Therefore Zechariah could be seen as among the leaders of the remnants.
Zechariah started his ministry two months after Haggai. Similar to Haggai, he encouraged God’s people to rebuild the Temple. At the same time, he announced God’s judgement to the nations, the Kingdom of God and the Messianic promise.
