Introduction

The Book of Numbers is often perceived as a book containing only statistics about Israel.  In fact, the Book of Numbers contains many other elements, including narratives and the Law.

In Jewish tradition, this book is also called “In the Wilderness.” The name highlights its importance in the Exodus story.  It describes how the Israelites travelled from Sinai to the wilderness of Paran, and finally reaching the plains of Moab.

The Book of Numbers narrates the transition from the disobedient generation who left Egypt and wandered in the desert, to the new generation who entered the Promised Land.  The book presents hope and new beginning to the Israelites.

At the same time, the book reveals to us a God who was faithful to His covenant and promise.  He provided what His people needed throughout the journey, and never left them alone.
