The year 2026 marks a major milestone as we celebrate Koinonia's 20th anniversary. Looking back over the past two decades, God has blessed us with His abundant grace. He has guided us through our ups and downs. From three founding families, our church has grown into the vibrant spiritual community we are today. Together, we navigated the shift to online services during the pandemic and our safe return to in-person worship. More recently, the wave of new immigrants has brought fresh opportunities, allowing us to witness Koinonia's continued growth and expansion.

Today, our attendance numbers are climbing, and ministries serving all age groups and needs are thriving. Naturally, with this expansion comes the challenge of managing our growth. While these growing pains are real, we believe they are a necessary part of becoming a healthy church. These hurdles also serve as great motivation, pushing us to keep growing in our spiritual lives.

Cantonese Worship

With summer over and September rolling in, kids and parents are back into the swing of church life. Right now, our Saturday services are seeing a steady combined attendance of 750 to 800 people. We are so thankful for God's guidance, allowing Koinonia to steadily grow at Fraserview MB Church. Fraserview does not just give us a stable place to worship; it gives us plenty of room to welcome our growing number of newcomers.

Admittedly, these higher numbers bring some practical challenges. Finding a parking spot may require extra patience, and the sanctuary can grow warm during the summer. However, we trust everyone is happy to bear with these "growing pains" as a sign of God's blessing. To keep up with this momentum, all of our ministry teams are actively recruiting. If Koinonia is your spiritual home, our pastoral team strongly encourages you to step up and start serving. Come join us in expanding God's kingdom.

On July 18th this year, we held a special Thanksgiving Service to celebrate our 20th anniversary. This was our first time bringing all three congregations together for a joint service. Through our 20th-anniversary sermon series, we received a clear direction from God's Word for our future. We need to do more than just count our past blessings; we must stay alert about our church's current spiritual health. This means reflecting on our shortcomings, understanding what Jesus asks of His church, and genuinely repenting. By stepping back into the role God intended for us, Koinonia will shine brightly as a lampstand in this generation.

English Worship

Our Saturday 5:00 PM English service is holding steady with an average attendance of 80 to 100 people. This year, we are incredibly grateful to welcome newcomers from non-Chinese backgrounds to worship with us. We are also seeing God raise up dedicated young leaders. Many of these leaders grew up right here in Koinonia's children, youth, and high school ministries. Now university graduates, they are carrying the torch to serve our church's third and fourth generations.

Our English worship ministry is still in its developing stage. It requires more resources and commitment from our congregation to create an ideal worship environment. We also need to give our leadership team the time they need to develop various ministries. We pray that through these efforts, God will raise up more disciples among the younger generation and across different cultural backgrounds. Ultimately, our prayer is to see them stand as bold witnesses for Jesus Christ in mainstream society.

College and High School Ministry

Over the past year, our college and high school ministries have experienced encouraging growth. Our Cantonese Youth OIKOS has hit 60 attendees. To better meet their needs, we have divided this group into junior high, senior high, and college sections. Our evening English ministry is also growing steadily, jumping from 56 people last year to nearly 70 this year. They are divided into high school and college groups, making up ten small groups in total. Combined attendance across our English and Cantonese youth ministries has reached 130, serving students all the way from Grade 8 through university.

This healthy growth boils down to two main things: First, we are thrilled to see kids who grew up in our children's and youth ministries sticking around and staying plugged into church life. Second, these young people are eager to invite their friends, including those who have never heard the Good News before.

A big thank you goes out to our leaders who have invested their time into walking alongside the next generation. As this ministry keeps expanding, we are in desperate need of mature believers to join the team. If God is tugging at your heart to help raise up the next generation, please contact our pastoral team.

Children and Youth Worship

We thank God for His abundant guidance over the past year as He continues to bring so many families to Koinonia. Every Saturday, over 150 children—from nursery up to Grade 7—now attend our children's and youth worship services. We are also deeply grateful for the more than 80 servants who faithfully serve in this ministry.

As our children and youth ministries continue to grow, we urgently need more brothers and sisters to step up and serve. Together, we can guide the next generation to know Jesus and help them build a solid foundation for their faith.

Some of the kids in our programs also have special needs. Because of this, we are especially looking for patient, loving brothers and sisters to gently walk alongside them during our worship services. If you have a heart for the next generation and are ready to commit to this life-giving ministry, we would love to hear from you. Please contact our pastoral team to get involved.

Small Group Ministry (Cantonese)

Oikos

Over the past year, we have continued to grow our small group ministries with a strong focus on building up disciples. We now offer four distinct tracks: Discipleship Training, Truth Transformation, Life Building, and a specialized Oikos group for seniors.

As of September 2026, a brand-new season of Oikos small groups is officially underway. We are incredibly blessed to have 360 people participating across 27 different groups. This means roughly 64% of our Cantonese adult congregation is now plugged into a small group! We also hosted two Pre-Oikos classes this year, with a third one set to launch in November.

As our overall worship attendance continues to rise, the number of people waiting to join a small group is growing right along with it. This brings us to the biggest bottleneck in expanding our small group ministry: a shortage of leaders. We are currently blessed with 60 dedicated leaders—averaging roughly two per group. However, to meet this massive need for pastoral care and connection, we urgently need more brothers and sisters willing to step into small group leadership. We encourage everyone to earnestly pray for this ministry. At the same time, we also challenge you to pursue your own spiritual growth and equip yourself to become a future leader, so that together we can continue building up the body of Christ.

Beyond our Oikos small groups, we also offer a variety of short-term groups, including:

Alpha Course

  • A 13-week program designed for anyone looking to explore faith and the meaning of life.
  • Total participants this year: 17
  • Seekers and non-believers: 10

Ignite - Basic Christianity

  • Designed to help believers build a solid foundation for their faith. It also gives seekers and non-believers a clear, structured way to explore the gospel message.
  • Total participants this year: 24 (English), 19 (Cantonese), and 44 (Youth).
  • Number of people baptized this year: 18.
  • Our next session will launch in late October, and registration is now open!

Grief Support Small Group

  • This four-week support group is designed for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one or friend. Guided by compassionate facilitators, participants share their experiences and pray for one another. It is a safe space to find comfort in Jesus Christ and draw strength from the Holy Spirit to face the challenges of daily life.
  • This year, nine people participated in the group, including several friends from outside the Koinonia community.

Women’s Small Group

  • Meeting every Tuesday morning, this group is perfect for stay-at-home moms. It provides a wonderful space to connect, build community, and support one another. Currently, we have nearly 15 women joining us each week.

Outreach Ministry

We currently have 50 dedicated brothers and sisters serving in this ministry. They regularly visit local hospices and nursing homes to worship alongside the residents. Through music and singing, they help seniors and patients deeply experience the love and comfort of Christ. Our team visits the nursing home on a Wednesday morning every other month, and the hospice on a Sunday afternoon every other month.

Due to administrative changes at the hospice, our ministry there concluded this September. While this specific chapter of service has closed, God has already opened a new door for us. He has opened a new door, allowing us to expand our outreach to another nursing home in Richmond.

With these transitions and the expansion of our ministry, we are actively looking for more brothers and sisters with a heart for seniors to join our team. If you feel called to serve in this way, please reach out to our pastoral team. Right now, we have a specific need for pianists. We would love for you to use your musical gifts to help us share God's love with the seniors!

Reaching Out Generosity Campaign

The "Reaching Out Generosity Campaign" is a special project launched back in 2020. The vision is simple: we encourage our church family to give financially beyond their regular monthly tithes to support local and global missions, as well as anti-poverty organizations. Through our collective generosity, these partners are empowered to expand their reach and care for those facing poverty, illness, and oppression.

For our 2026 campaign, we are proud to support ten different organizations:

  • Richmond Hospital Foundation

  • Compassion Canada

  • Greater Vancouver Food Bank

  • International Justice Mission (IJM)

  • Lifewater Canada

  • Regent College

  • Richmond Christian School

  • The Media Evangelism Association Canada

  • Vancouver Short-Term Mission Training Centre

  • Showers of Blessing Evangelistic Ministry

Staff Team

For our staff team, 2026 has been another year filled with both challenges and grace. As attendance continues to grow across our services, the demands of pastoral care and ministry operations have increased. At the same time, we are patiently waiting on God to bring the right new staff members to our team.

To support the future of our church, the pastoral leadership is taking deliberate steps to plan for succession and raise up the next generation of leaders. We urgently require younger pastors to join our team, as navigating this transition places a heavy demand on our current staff.

Despite the heavy workload, our team remains deeply committed to their calling. Their dedication, unity, and hard work serve as a wonderful model for our congregation. It is incredibly inspiring to see how their faithfulness encourages so many brothers and sisters to step up and serve the Lord with that same heart.

Even in the midst of this busy season, our church has an incredibly exciting event just around the corner. On October 10th, we will be holding an ordination service. We will officially ordain four members of our pastoral team: Ps Ava, Ps Sherrien, Ps Carson, and Ps Gabriel. We warmly invite our entire church family to join us for this special occasion as we witness God's amazing guidance over our church and the lives of these faithful coworkers.

Please continue to keep our staff team in your prayers. We ask that you pray for their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, asking God to give them the grace and strength they need each day. At the same time, please pray earnestly for our ongoing hiring process. We trust that God is already preparing the right people to join our team.

Next year...

As Koinonia officially enters its 21st year, we are looking ahead to this new season with great anticipation. While we continue to pray for God's guidance and steady growth for our church, our deepest desire is to see our spiritual walk deepen and transform through the various discipleship pathways.

Discipleship will remain the central focus for our pastoral team. We want to place a stronger emphasis on intentionally supporting one another. By building relationships rooted in mutual accountability, we can grow together in every aspect of our faith. We firmly believe that this shared commitment is absolutely essential for equipping believers to become true disciples of Jesus.

At the same time, we eagerly look to God to abundantly bless our second and third generations —including our English congregation, young adult and high school ministries, and our thriving children’s and youth programs. May the Lord raise up and strengthen our next generation, empowering them to become faithful followers and witnesses for Jesus.

Your Growth, Your Commitment

The pastoral team has always reminded our congregation: 'Koinonia Church is not a place to just drop in and feel comfortable.'

Our vision is to establish a community of believers in the Greater Vancouver area based on biblical truth, to train disciples, equipping more disciples to participate in the expansion of God's Kingdom, becoming a lamp in the community, and shining for the Lord.

If you share this vision, we invite you to take the church’s mission (https://english.mykec.ca/about) as your own and commit to pray for the ministry.

Here are three ways our pastoral team encourages you to get involved:

(1) Praying for Church Growth and Ministry Opportunities

  • Pray for sufficient resources to maintain the church and provide greater space for expansion.

  • Pray that God will send suitable workers to join the pastoral team.

  • Pray that God will raise more small group leaders and mentors for the youth.

  • Pray that God will move every brother and sister to give faithfully and systematically, and to learn self-sacrificial love by serving Jesus in various roles.

  • Pray that God will bless brothers and sisters to be more generous in participating in the "Reaching Out Generosity Campaign".

  • Pray that God will raise a heart for prayer and intercession among the

congregation, allowing the church to experience God's faithfulness and power

through prayer and triumph over spiritual warfare in the Lord.

(2) Becoming a Servant, Serving People You Haven't Met

Pastors encourage every member to stop coming to church merely as an audience every week and instead be willing to participate alongside others. Since Koinonia is your spiritual home, you should not return with a consumer mindset. Respond to God's calling by immediately joining a ministry team and begin serving God by serving one another in the church.

(3) Joining a Small Group and Striving to Grow

The numbers cited in this report do not mean we only focus on quantitative growth. The numbers are an objective indicator of church growth, but true growth is reflected in the spiritual maturity of brothers and sisters and the life change of every disciple. Therefore, pastors encourage every member to seriously participate in a small group and follow the growth paths provided by the pastoral team: "Discipleship Training, Truth Transformation, Spiritual Formation, Kingdom Movement, and Disciple Making". We want you to progress systematically, intentionally, and actively, becoming a disciple who can equip others to be disciples.

May God bless you all, and may He continue to bless Koinonia as a spiritual community. Let us faithfully live out our true identity and the mission Jesus has entrusted to us on earth:

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13–16)
