Introduction

It is commonly believed that the Prophet Haggai wrote this book around 520 BC.

This book is Haggai’s speech to the remnants.  It was a time when Judah continued to be disturbed by neighbouring countries, and the construction of God’s Temple was on hold for nearly 15 years.  At that time, Darius was the king of the Persian Empire.  Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel was the Governor of Judah.  Joshua the son of Jehozadak was the high priest.

Eventually God’s people became lukewarm to the Temple construction.  Most of the time, they only cared about their own living.  God used Haggai to reignite their passion to build His temple.  The four messages in this book were Haggai’s challenge and announcement of God’s promise to His people.  Through Haggai, God also re-focused His people to the Messianic Hope.
