Daniel

The Prophet Daniel was believed to be the author of this book, which was written in around 530 BC. 

“Daniel” means “God is my judge.” The name was a true reflection of Daniel’s life.  In his life, we can see how God brought justice for him. In general, the Book of Daniel can be separated into two parts - historical narrative of Daniel’s life and God’s revelation for Daniel. 

Born in a time of warfare and exile, Daniel fell from an elite of Judah to a captive in Babylon.  Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, tried to enculturate the captive Jews through distinguished treatments for their elites.   It was an attempt to eliminate the Jewish culture and religion. 

However, Daniel and his friends chose to stand firm for Yahweh, their God.  Even in face of death and crisis, they still stood firm for their faith and values.  They looked up to God for salvation and protection, no matter whether it was the hot furnace or the lion’s den.  Unexpectedly, their persistence had won the trust and recognition of the king.  It showed us how God could work among His people, despite of unfavourable circumstances.  

Through His revelation to Daniel, the Lord showed to His people that He is the God of all nations.  While human relied on their own achievement and success, God asserted that even the most powerful kingdom on earth would one day be replaced.  Only God has the eternal sovereignty.  Only God and His people will have the ultimate victory.
