Introduction

When Peter wrote this letter, he knew his time had come—he would die soon. This letter was thus seen as a farewell letter to the church.

In this letter, Peter encouraged believers to commit themselves in their faith, to participate in God’s great mission, and to live in a way to show God’s love and life. It was his final challenge to the church.

For example, he warned believers of corrupted teachers who distorted the meaning of freedom and Jesus’ return.  He also warned them of the danger of being led into indulgences and a sinful way of living.  Peter then corrected the misinformation regarding Jesus’ return, reminding believers that Jesus will surely come, during which all works will be exposed.  Each person will be judged by God according to their work. On the other hand, all promises will be realized at that time. Peter also emphasized that Jesus’ return should be the ultimate hope of believers.

Finally, Peter reminded all believers to examine their lives—to be sure that they are on their way to becoming a mature christian and to not fall into the trap of corrupt teachers.
